Rajasthan To Launch A Road Safety Campaign With An Emphasis On Rural Areas

Jaipur: Rajasthan Transport Minister Yunus Khan today directed officials to make a detailed plan for a campaign on road safety in all the 33 districts of the state with special emphasis on rural areas.

Mr Khan said that road safety workshops and conferences should not be confined to only urban areas but also include and reach out to remote villages and other rural areas.

Addressing the inaugural session of a state-level workshop of road safety here, Mr Khan said the government had started a special campaign for road safety at the Panchayat-level which had been delivering positive results and should be continued.

He also asked the officers to identify the areas and districts where the number of road accidents is higher and take make those districts a priority for the campaign.

“If the drivers follow traffic rules, the number of road accidents can be brought down. But the main challenge is reaching out to the drivers. There are 65 lakh students enrolled at the senior secondary level in the state who are below the age of 18. They are the potential (driving license seekers) and should be made aware of traffic rules,” he said.

Senior officers of the transport department, representatives of NGOs working the area of road safety participated in the workshop.
