Mrs. Sangeeta Khera died at the age of 56 years, due to a completely unexpected and unexplained brain-hemorrhage at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital on the 20th of December 2011. She was a hale and hearty mother of two and had no history of any disease. Her death came when she was with her husband and friends vacationing at a resort near Delhi.
She complained of a headache one night. At first her husband thought she was just tired but as her headache became worse he rushed her to the nearest hospital. She was admitted with a severe headache and vomiting to Escorts – Fortis Hospital in Faridabad and then to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, where she was operated. She was then kept on ventilator until she was declared Brain dead on the 20th of December.
Her husband, Mr. Ravi Khera, recalls the day vividly. On the afternoon of 20th December 2011, he was approached by doctors who counseled and motivated him about organ donation. As her organs were quite healthy they could be donated. Mr. Khera discussed the options with his two sons and other family members, and decided to donate her organs.
“It was a hard decision to donate Sangeeta’s organs after death” he says. “There was some resistance from some members of the family. But finally everyone understood that though her life could not be saved, but by donating her organs she could at least save the life of 4-5 people and give them a second chance of life.”
“Organ donation empowered me to console myself during this point of grief because somebody lived through her organs. I didn’t lose her but kept her alive in others”.
Ravi Khera has been a vocal proponent of organ donation and has spoken at various functions motivating others to pledge their organs.
