New Delhi: Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda addressed the ‘7th Indian Organ Donation Day’ in New Delhi and said a target of 20 lakh pledges has been set by the ministry for the end of 2017. He also felicitated states and individuals for their contribution towards raising organ donation rates in the nation.
Tamil Nadu received the ‘best cadaver transplant performing state’ while Maharashtra won ‘best performance in the field of organ donation’.
Mr Nadda, at the event, stressed on the critical need for strengthening infrastructure and improving human resources for retrieval and transplantation.
“We must work towards improving the standard of organ transplantation so that donated organs are successively used to save lives. While doing this, we must balance speed, skill and scale effectively to achieve the desired outcomes in organ donation and transplantation,” he said.
The state of Madhya Pradesh won the best emerging state award and Rajasthan received an award for another emerging state.
Further, the minister awarded Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune with the ‘best hospital award’ while PGI, Chandigarh and Apollo Hospital, Tamil Nadu won second and third place respectively.
“The hospitals should concentrate on ICU and Trauma Units for raising awareness and encouraging people for organ donation,” Mr Nadda said.
Mr S. Senthil Kumar received the award for the ‘best transplant coordinator’. The minister also felicitated transplant recipients Ms Reena Raju from Light A Life who suffered from end-stage heart failure at the age of 25 and Mr Amarnath Tanwar, a paralympic winner from Haryana, who participated in the 15th transplant games of Australia in Sydney and won two silver medals in badminton.
Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda was also present at the event where he pledged his organs and championed for organ donation. Organ donor families were also recognised and felicitated at the event.
