Ishrat, a student of Class VI, was very irregular to school. She wasn’t interested in academics, and would spend most of her time scavenging for rags. She picked up this occupation from her father, a sole breadwinner for the family with five more children to feed. He was a rag-picker before he took to selling vegetables.

Soon after she became associated with the Nanhi Kali Project, her Community Activist, as teachers at the NGO are addressed as, noticed that she wasn’t attending classes in school. Ishrat’s parents didn’t want her to attend school because if free, she would help bring home a little more money by rag-picking, or she’d be available to carry out routine chores that would free up her mother for odd jobs and additional income. Members of the NGO made frequent visits to her home to explain the need and importance of a good education to her parents. After much convincing, her parents understood and agreed to ensure she was more regular to school.

Now, Ishrat is keen to study and hungry to learn. She actively participates in several extra-curricular activities conducted by the NGO’s Academy Support Centre that helps children grasp academics better. She recently won the second prize at the district level in a Drawing Competition held in her school. The competition saw 150 students contending to win.

Ishrat’s parents are now doing everything in their power to ensure she receives quality education and realises her dream of becoming a teacher.

Nanhi Kali is an NGO dedicated to the primary education of girls from underprivileged backgrounds.
