Mumbaikars, you are probably familiar with the unique identity number or Aadhaar that has been issued to Indian citizens, now get ready to have an unique identity number for buildings as well. Mumbai’s civic body – the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to identify the different buildings with 15-digit numbers to make property management easier. Here’s 4 ways it will help make life easier.

1) You don’t need to write out detailed addresses

When interacting with different civic agencies, you usually have to write out your complete address in different forms. Sometimes an areas may be spelled in different ways, causing computers to reject forms because the spelling you have given your area may not match what is in the system. Once the unique identity number comes in, you will only have to enter the 15-digit number and rest easy that your application will be processes properly.

2) Everything will be centralised

The unique identity number will be updated in the records of all departments across the BMC including building permissions, water etc. This will make process your application and request easier as each department will collate information under the unique number.

3) It will boost transparency

The BMC is notorious for its red tape and bureaucratic delays. But the unique identity number will take a lot of the agency’s process online – boosting transparency. Approvals should also be faster, as the application should move from department to department quickly.

4) It will be time saving

You will also save a lot of time as you will not have to run to different departments to check the status of your application. You can sit at home and track its status online using the unique identity number. According to the BMC officials, the software for this system is ready and the corporation is hoping to roll this out in the month of October. Once it is implemented, we will know for sure if it is everything it promises to be.
