Sheetal from Govindpuri, Delhi
Age: 9
Question: Did you ever tell your mother you want to go to school?
Sheetal: I did, but she said it’s more important that I work right now. We need the money.
Question: What about your father? What’s his opinion on you going to school?
Sheetal: He outright refuses to send me to school. I don’t know why.
Question: What will you do once the Save the Children gets you a seat in a school?
Sheetal: Mummy se zabardasti karungi main (I will pressurise my mother and tell her I want to study).
Question: How do you think studying will benefit you?
Sheetal: I don’t really know. But, my friends tell me that if I study, I will be able to figure out what the shopkeeper writes in the bill.
– As told to Tania Goklany. She met Sheetal at a Save the Children Centre in Govindpuri, Delhi.
It is the best story for campaign of “Education for All” I have ever come across
There are many Sheetals in our nation. Pray that it become every ones social responsibility to promote education some form or other. Hats for the efforts.
Simple but appealing….
How can I help her?
Hi Rohit,
Thank you for extending support to Sheetal. You can directly get in touch with Save the Children, the trust Sheetal belongs to, at this email address s.avinash@savethechildren.in. The role of NDTV is only restricted to that of a facilitator between the intending donors and Sheetal, and that NDTV is only promoting the initiative on a best efforts basis.
If this organization can compensate such parents financially,at least initially, many such children can become educated and in course, enable more and more children to become educated regularly. This can transform our nation.
Is there a way we can deposit money in sheetal’s bank account that is exclusively hers?
Hi Harsha,
Thank you for extending support to Sheetal. However, as a policy, NDTV doesn’t collect funds directly, on behalf of an individual or organisation. For further details, you can directly get in touch with Save the Children, the trust Sheetal belongs to, at this email address s.avinash@savethechildren.in. The role of NDTV is only restricted to that of a facilitator between the intending donors and Sheetal, and that NDTV is only promoting the initiative on a best efforts basis.
Parents think short term. Poorer parents think even shorter. Tania please tell Sheetal to study as hard as she can.
Reservation should be abolished. Kid should be helped financially – parents should not be allowed to send their children for work as domestic helps till at least 16.
BETI PADAO BETI BACHAO
Only way is which ever student (poor) wants to study, Govt. should provide hostel and good school for studying. All expenses should be borne by Govt. The illiterate poor parents will work hard and feed themselves.Child should not be sent by parents to work and earn money
Awakening story, we need more awareness and regulations to make education available for all. Salutes to such NGOs.
This is a fundamental right and no one must be deprived of this right. Activists must be more vigilant.
