Mumbai Police’s Brilliant Road Safety Strategy In 140 Characters
Highlights

  • Many posts are creatively laden with puns, rhymes and funny images
  • Humour is being used to create awareness among people.

We live in the age of social media and a number of traffic police departments have taken to Twitter and Facebook to provide real time updates on road traffic, as well as create awareness on road safety. While these pages and handles are highly informative and helpful, they are also quite serious. Just as we would expect the traffic police to be. But in a departure from the staid and the traditional, the Mumbai Police have come up with a winning strategy.

From puns to two-liners to rhymes, the Mumbai police twitter handle has shown that even the most serious topics can be tackled with humour. Here’s a round up of some of our favourite tweets.

A clever take on the much followed convention of tying lemons and chillies on the rear view mirror for good luck during driving; this tweet puts across a strong the message against drunk driving.

Another clever rhyme, this was shared by the official Twitter handle of the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai. The graphic accompanying the tweet carries a warning against overspeeding.

A clever pun on wine and whine and an even more clever use of emoticons to depict what drunk driving could lead to; this tweet is creative sensitivity at its best!

Taking on the ill habit of using mobile phones while driving, this tweet warns drivers against using their mobile phones during driving.

Addressing the issue of overspeeding, this tweet truthfully states how overspeeding is directly proportional to rising hospital bills.

The Mumbai Police has a very cosmopolitan image and the idea to come on Twitter was to reach out to people and break the ice. We decided to take the humour route with some of our posts because Mumbai is a very lively city and people have a great sense of humour. Humour is a very nice and pleasant way to reach out to people and create awareness among them, said Sunchika Pandey, Consultant, Content & Creative @MumbaiPolice & @CPMumbaiPolice.
