Juicing has been around for quite some time now, with fruit juices being quite an integral part of our childhood. However, it is only now that the health benefits of juicing  are being spoken about in the mainstream world of fitness. For people who are new to the term ‘juicing’, nutrition and fitness expert Ekta Vermani Tandon defines it as “Juicing is hydrating and nourishing your body with a healthy blend of fruits and vegetables juices containing natural and fresh goodness in abundance”.

Fans of juicing believe that one glass of juice everyday equals a wholesome and healthy diet

Juicing is mainly divided into two types- Fruits and Vegetables.

An individual can simultaneously opt for both by blending the two.

Juices are healthier alternatives to soft drinks and other artificially prepared beverages that are not just unhealthy but can lead to weight gain.

Juices also act as a shield against unhealthy ingredients such as toxic fats, added sugar, salt and other additives.

The flipside is that fruits juices do not have pulp thereby decreasing the fibre content levels. These fibres are highly beneficial in lowering cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

People tend to prefer fruit juices since they are sweeter, however, unlike a whole fruit, juices do not contain any fibre content. Hence, drinking fruit juice can lead to a rapid spike in sugar levels.

On the other hand, vegetable juices are healthier as they don’t increase insulin levels. Another benefit of vegetable juice is that it can effortlessly include raw and leafy vegetables which are otherwise ignored or excluded in our daily diet.

Fitness experts warn of the boredom that an individual tends to develop in a juice diet.

A few days into the juicing diet and you will be completely irritable and ravished regardless of the nutrients consumed, says Ms Tandon.

Tip: Instead of switching completely to a liquid juice diet, replace one meal with a juice that is heavier on vegetables and lighter on fruits. This way you can reap benefits of juices and at the same time have a balanced diet.
