In this, the 75th year of India’s Independence, NDTV – 100Pipers Glassware are honouring true legends who have gone well beyond the material markers of success to create an altogether different kind of impact. These are the True Legend, the champions of good, who have achieved true success and are creating a real legacy. They are the Future of Young India.

To launch the awards and introduce people with the awards process, NDTV – 100Pipers Glassware organised a special Townhall, where jury members came together to discuss the process of the awards and how they will be evaluating the nominees.

A Look At The Awards

There will be nine categories, and each category will have five nominees. The winners in each category will be decided through a combination of what our jury decides and public voting. The five jury members for the awards are Bhaichung Bhutia, Footballer, Former India Captain, Arjuna & Padma Shri Awardee; Ghazal Alagh, Co-Founder, Mamaearth; Kunal Kapoor, Actor & Co-Founder, Ketto; Rabbi Shergill, Musician and Taran Chhabra, Founder & Ceo, Neeman.

Joining NDTV for the Townhall, Ghazal Alagh, Co-Founder, Mamaearth said,

I think it is really difficult to measure one legacy over another. The reason it is called legacy is because it leaves a long lasting impact and is not measurable. I think, the only thing, I will be considering to evaluate these nominees will be how long have their impact lasted for. For me the evaluation will be on one simple thing – if that intervention or outcome of the person wasn’t there in this world today then what impact it would have created and that will help me decided one over the other nominee in this award.

Highlighting what defines a better world, Rabbi Shergill, Musician said,

To me, better world has to be define in terms of the real legacy, both in philosophical and material. For instance, if I have to really define India for myself and my kids, I think, I will look at the values, architecture and how all of that amalgamates different influencers. I see, India and its goodness, in its languages, in the way it is, its belief system, the food we eat and the clothes we wear.

Further talking about the evolution process and how he will be doing it, Mr Shergill said,

“The simple metric, I would use is, how was the society before the person’s set innovation and how is the society after that. All the great heroes I have met, they are almost the backstory to my life. I feel that the world shifts its access a little bit after somebody’s work, for example, look at Amitabh Bachchan, there was a cinema before him and there is the cinema after him. So, I will follow the same path for evaluation and look out for positive change.”

Talking about impact and how each and everyone of us can contribute, Kunal Kapoor, Actor & Co-Founder, Ketto said,

“Usually people assume that people need to do something very big to make an impact and I don’t think it is true. On our platform Ketto, we see, everyday people contributing small amounts of money but that small amount makes a huge impact. And I think, we can all make a difference, we can start with our own immediate environment, we can educate our staff, children – if you don’t want to donate your money then you can volunteer your time. If there is a skill you know, you could teach that to others, so I don’t think there is any big impact or small impact. I think each contribution really matters and we should go out there and contribute something.”

Highlighting how he will evaluate the nominees in this awards, Mr Kapoor said, “I think, for me, it will obviously be the impact but that’s also gonna be very challenging. Each one of the nominees is the legend and each one of them has done something or the other which is very remarkable and it will be very difficult to measure impact of one person over other. But impact will be the big defining measure – what kind of impact one has created in the society and how many lives they have impacted, is what I will be looking at.”

Bhaichung Bhutia, Footballer, Former India Captain, Arjuna & Padma Shri Awardee also joined the Townhall and said,

“For me a legend is definitely somebody who can inspire people for positive change and contribute to the nation as well. Someone, who can help lift his/her own community, state and country, thereby

inspiring millions of people. For me, the evaluation will be on one simple thing, I will look at people, who have achieved something big apart from the mainstream. In India, we look at only Bollywood and Cricket, but there are many other things and sports which are not given its due credit. There must be a person or team who have gone on to perform some sports, which might not be mainstream but they achieved something big and made a difference and that’s what I am really looking at.”

Last but not the least, Taran Chhabra, Founder & CEO, Neeman also joined the Townhall and said, “It is all about act of goodness and I will look at the same. When I talk about True legend, i think about how many lives the act has impacted and is the person able to create a ripple effect across the ecosystem. For me, the evaluation will be on looking at the consistency of the intervention by the nominee. Everyone starts something or the other, but the important thing to look at is if they are able to sustain it. Because that’s where deeper impact comes from.”

Apart from the nine categories, which are open for Public Voting and Jury Nomination, the awards will see one more special Honorary Category – Defence. This category is a celebration of the men and women in uniform who have selflessly and bravely served India for 75 years, through three wars, in times of peace, when tragedies have struck – protecting our borders, our seas and our skies, our people, the very idea of India. Their countless inspiring acts of goodness are beyond rewards – they are duty for these men and women. And that is why we honour them all. In this category, there will be no scoring or voting.

Talking about the men and women in uniform who have selflessly served India for 75 years, Lt Gen Satish Dua, Former Chief Of Integrated Defence Staff joined the Townhall and said, “I think the concept of unlimited liability, embodies the arm forces with the thought ‘service before self’. When the solider goes into combat, he is prepared to die, which is hugely disproportionate to his salary, pension or death benefits etc. After all, what price you can put on somebody’s life. I think the best way to practice ‘service before self’ is by being a good citizen. It is a tough call. It is all about choosing the harder right over the easy wrong. In fact, I often say this, If you have to respect army, if you want to respect the sacrifice of a soldier, just be a good citizen. A good citizen is worth dying for.”
