New Delhi: An average of four lakh Indians die every year, hoping and praying for organs to get a transplant. India’s rate of organ donation is a dismal 0.8 donors per million population, one of the lowest in the world. The demand for organs far exceeds its supply and organ donors continue to wait in the dark. In order to change the dismal state of organ donation in India and spread awareness to get more Indians to become organ donors, NDTV along with Fortis organised a seven-city Walkathon on Sunday to mobilise citizens in this direction. Actor Raima Sen joined the initiative and flagged off the 2.5 kilometre walk in order to take the cause to the streets of Kolkata and urge people to pledge their organs and join the movement.
Talking about the importance of organ donation, Raima Sen said,
Some of my friends have been saved because of organ donation, so I have realised the importance of this cause closely.
She further added,
I have always been thinking about donating my eyes, but after coming here, I want to donate other organs too.

Raima Sen also talked about how organ donation and initiatives like Walkathon can help save lives of thousands of people across India. She added,
One can save upto 8 lives by donating organs. By doing these Walkathons, we will raise awareness about this cause. Families are the hardest to convince, hopefully they will realise through these drives that it is okay to pledge organs.
Along with Kolkata, NDTV-Fortis organised the #MoreToGive organ donation Walkathon in Chennai, Bengaluru, Gurugram (Gurgaon), Mumbai, Jaipur and Mohali. So far, 9 crore steps have been taken in order to raise awareness about Organ Donation cause in the country, as currently, India’s organ donation rate is one of the lowest in the world.
