5 Things Government Needs to do on Priority to Improve Air Quality
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), air pollution is the world’s biggest environmental health risk, causing at least one in eight deaths around the globe.
Last year, Delhi was ranked as the most polluted city in the world by the WHO. Our national capital beat China to achieve this dubious status.
According to our in-house expert, Dr. Anumita Roy Choudhary, here are five things that our government needs to do on an urgent basis to improve the quality of the air we breathe:
- Implement clean air action plan to meet clean air standards within five years
- Provide better public transport facilities to reduce personal vehicles on roads
- Operate all power plants on natural gas
- Allow only Euro vehicles and stop trucks from entering cities
- Skip Euro V fuel norms and leap frog to Euro VI emission standards
India follows European standards for vehicles and fuels. Experts believe that skipping directly to Euro V1 emission standards will improve air quality and benefit public health.
