The New Year revelry may have ended across other cities in the country but in Jaipur it is peak tourist season and the party is still on, and that’s one reason why the Jaipur traffic police has revved up its drive to keep the city’s roads safe.

On 31st night, 16 teams were in place to stop drunken driving and in the last week of December itself, 600 vehicles were challaned for drunken driving. That’s why on 31st night, there were hardly any accidents. The Jaipur traffic police have 16 teams with breath analyzers but in the next three months it plans to take it unto 50.

Each year, 9,000 people die in road accidents in Rajasthan, says Mr Haider, SP Traffic, Jaipur. Out of which Jaipur roads see around 450 deaths and the main reason is the increasing traffic pressure, he added. In the past 10 years, traffic in Jaipur has increased by 200 %. So road safety is a concern and the drive to make roads safe is a continuous process, he said.

Apart from the drive against drunken driving, the Jaipur traffic police is also taking measures to ensure the smooth and safe flow of traffic in the city.

As part of the safety measures, 51 accident prone spots have been identified in the city where accidents regularly take place, encroachments are being removed and roads are being improved to make these spots safe for commuters.

This also includes turning roundabouts into red lights. So far six congested circles in the city have been turned into red light crossings to ensure a safer and smoother ride in Jaipur.
