Rajasthan’s New Road Safety Policy Could Bring Down Accidents By 50%

Jaipur: The Rajasthan Cabinet today cleared the first state road safety policy with a target to bring down
casualties in road accidents by 50 per cent.

The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje also took other decision including amendments in Rajasthan Rent Control Act-2001 and various service rules of the state employees.
“Rajasthan is now among those states which have their road safety policies. The policy has institutional, statutory and financial provisions with an aim to bring down the rate of accidents,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Rathore told the reporters.

Sharing the figures on road accidents, the Minister said 8,733 people were killed and 22,255 injured in 20,201 road accidents in the year 2015.

Considering 2015 as the base year for the policy, the government has fixed a target to bring down the deaths in road accidents by half by the year 2020, he said.

A dedicated road safety fund will also be set up. 25 per cent of the penalty amount taken on traffic rules
violation will be transferred to the fund, he said.
The Minister informed that the spots where most of the accidents occur will be identified. Amendment in Rajasthan Rent Control Act-2001 was also among other decisions.
The Act will now be applicable in all the 190 urban areas, he said.
